“Bring the Beauty of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Home – Impressionist Landscapes for Every Space.”

Gary McCaslin's Artistic Journey

Hello and welcome!

I'm very happy that you have taken the time to learn more about me and my work.

My journey as an artist began in the 70's and 80's, a time shaped by significant art movements such as the rise of the Pictures Generation, as well as the ongoing influence of Pop Art and Conceptualism. Growing up during this period I was naturally drawn to realism. A foundation that would shape my artistic pursuits.

I was fortunate to grow up in a family that valued hard work and resilience as both of my parents were farmers. Serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam wars. After serving transitioning to careers as an electrical engineer at IBM and a dedicated stay-at-home mom. I deeply appreciate their experiences and opportunities that provided for my brother and I.

By the time I graduated high school I had already developed a passion for technical illustration, with several of my drawings published in textbooks along with nonfiction works. An opportunity made possible by entrepreneurial teachers who recognized my abilities. My dream was to become an album cover artist.

Influenced by Chuck Close's early works and his contemporaries at Yale. I developed a deep appreciation for the rich history of artists who studied at the Art Students League of New York. I became particularly captivated by the works of Andrew Wyeth, Georgia O’Keeffe, and John Singer Sargent as well as the master painters of the 19th century.

While I had many opportunities after high school, including in athletics. I ultimately chose to pursue a path in engineering. Later expanding my studies to include statistics and accounting. Over the past 27 years I have had the privilege of serving as an executive leader in the retail, manufacturing, distribution, and sales industries. Throughout my career I have continued my artistic education through both independent studies and structured programs. Including course work at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I have also been fortunate to study from graduates of the Art Students League such as Leo Neufeld and masterworks in museums around the world.

In 2008 my wife and I purchased fourteen acres in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. We undertook the humbling process of building our own home ourselves. After moving here full time in 2017 we built my art studio with a long term goal of establishing myself as a local painter. Surrounded by the rugged shores of Lake Superior, vast forests and ever changing northern skies. I have found endless inspiration in the wild beauty of the Upper Peninsula.

Today, I am dedicated to capturing the essence of the landscape through my impressionist paintings. Sharing my work with collectors and art enthusiasts who connect with the region’s natural beauty as deeply as I do.

I am very thankful people appreciate my work and choose to hang it in your homes. It is thrilling, wonderful and humbling.

Thank you!
